Just imagine what is means to use the open source philosophy not only in software but also in hardware.

It means you can downloand the blueprints of a tractor and build it at a fraction of the costs it would take to purchase one.

The Open Source Ecology team is producing these blueprints and publicising them on their wiki. Their goal is to produce the blueprints of a set of 50 essential industrial machines, which you need to build a small, sustainable civilization with modern comfort. So far the prototyped more than 8. 

Of course not everyone is able to build a tractor on their own, so this will create a whole new industry of companies building open source machines and selling them!
